Local 19: The Struggle to Organize
When the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co. closed in 1992, longtime employee Jack Zais didn’t stop working with the company. He immediately began researching the plant history with the intent of writing the most comprehensive series of books on one of Eau Claire’s largest employers. “Local 19, the Struggle to Organize” covers the period of 1918 through 1938 when the Company and Union signed their first “written” contract. This book deals with the difficulties encountered in 1918 when a group of workers formed a Union that tried to organize the workforce.
