It’s 2034. A power shift has redrawn the nation’s social and political landscape. For some people, life becomes oppressive. Sandy, almost twelve, has come to live with her grandmother Maggie. One day, Oma, as Sandy calls her grandmother, suggests they take a walk. Walking Away to Freedom is their adventure, a story of faith, hope, and love as Maggie and Sandy flee in search of safety and freedom.

On the way, Maggie and Sandy meet Josh, a young black man with a circle scar on his forehead, and Emanuel, who has lost contact with his family. Along with a newborn baby they find in the snow, this unlikely family journeys together. They encounter hostile people, police, soldiers, dogs, rain, snow, hunger, even death. But they find kindness too, on this walk to freedom.
